That's awesome Joe!! That'll make someone competitive in CSW, WS and the other So. Cal tracks that "need" the short 5th. Thanks for helping the guys out. This is not sarcasm but true sportsmanship. Where else do you see guys helping bthe competition? Nowhere but the Spec 944's!!! I may be out for awhile but not forgotten!!

PS - Give the RedBull #170 all the help and consideration you gave me!! He'll be there with you. (And in a car that can kick all of your as$'s) ((Mike Weitze can attest to that!!))

Good luck guys,

I'm right in line behind Cory... please let me know if it falls through, I'll take it for sure.

And BTW, anyone know if it would be possible to take a sample short fifth and have a batch of say 100 manufactured? It's just a gear, can't be that hard to replicate in AutoCAD... and I'm sure one coul

Guys,

I have list 3 deep looking for this 5th gear. Cory you are #2 on the list sorry.

The gear is not mine, but will be for sale from a 3rd party. I still need to verify 2 things with that person.

1) Gear is really a short 5th

2) Gears are in good condition.

Joe, no problem, let me know if buyer #1 drops out.

There is actually a ton of engineering and manufacturing knowledge that goes into these simple looking gears, it's not the kind of thing the local machine shop is going to drop into their CNC mill. The guy you should talk to is Paul Guard of Guard Transmission (http://www.guardtransmission.com/) they make gears and LSD for a lot of racing Porsches. I doubt the plan will be cost effective unless you get a really big quantity but who knows, there are a lot of 944's being converted for the track so maybe the demand is there if the price is reasonable. I believe you can still get the parts new from Porsche for around $300.

My 5th gear came from Porsche, OEM. But I think it was more like $500 and I got it for cost I thought? I could find out for sure if people want to know if they are still available from the factory and how much for sure? The other thing to do is start looking for the Turbo trannies or asking Turbo guys who have upgraded their engines if they now want a taller 5th gear to give either a) more top end speed with that upgraded engine, or b) better cruising gas mileage?

After actually having the car out and sorted into a fairly-well-running unit, I can really see how this would be an awesome upgrade--if not absolutely necessary. At BW, I was on the limiter in 4th several places. Didn't dare poke it into 5th. Might stall it!

Well,

I may have jumped the guy a bit.

The potential seller needs to pull the gear from the gearbox and may not get to it for a few weeks.

SO... this gear won't be avalible anytime soon.

Sorry about that.

Right now I have the list at 3

1) Larry Leaming - Az

2) Cory Muscat - Ca

3) Eric S - Or

Once I get confirmation that the gear is ready forsale I will contact you guys in order.

I have a spare set of short 5th gears and a complete short 5th gear tranny still in a running and driving 924S. According to the DME numbers, the 924S also has the high compression engine.

Frank, If the DME part number is an 88, I would say the engine must be. Check the VIN and see if it's a "J" car? All the 924S's came with the short 5th as did the 88 944.

This gear pair can also be had in all the 944 turbo's, the 944S, and the 89 944 2.7 liter car, BUT NOT the 944S2.

It's also available in some AUDI models! Check you local junkyard.

BTW, you can count the teeth on the gear pair to verify what your getting. Should be 35:29, i.e., 35 teeth on one gear, 29 on the other.

The 924S is an 1987 with the H code but with the DME ending 05 which is identical to the 88 944 DME. All 3 87 924S I had use that DME. The short 5th gear set is still in the 944S transmission with AGP code and 35:29 or .829 gear ratio. I also have a 87 turbo tranny with that gear set and that transmission will never see 5th gear as it will be converted to a drag car.

Well, that's a new one to me, Frank... My books show the 87 924S and 944 coming with an 04 part number DME ...
