Hard to find parts? (924s)

I am considering putting together a 944-spec car for next season, and I'm kind of leaning towards the 924s option, but there seems to be a couple of hurdles... 1) What's the deal with the front lower valance? Both of the 924's on Denver craigslist are missing this part, and one guy claims that it's nearly impossible to find. And, 2) it seems that the 924s comes with 15x6, so that brings me to the question of, "where do I get 944-spec legal 15x7 rims, and how much should I expect to spend?".

Are there any other rare parts that I need to keep in mind?

Thanks

Welcome!

1.) My 924S came with the lower valence, though it was pretty banged up. I've seen them for sale on different forums from time to time and I'm sure a few guys on this forum have extras lying around. That'll probably run you $100-200. I would look for a parts car for stuff like that though.

2.) 15x7 late offset phone dials are for sale on the forums from time to time as well. I got a set of 4, with nearly new sticky Yokohamas for $250 locally. I think I got pretty lucky, but you can find just the wheels for $150-300 on eBay all the time.

I'm building a 924S for 944-Spec. Check it out if you like:

Keep in mind that the front spoiler on the 924S is the same as on the 924. You can still get just the center section from Porsche dealers. Last I checked, I found 3 around the country. Your local dealer can do a search of the other dealers inventory.

Are you working with Jim Bryant?

The white one is in bad shape. not worth $1000 ...

the red one ????

I have some rims if you need a loaner set, and have sold some in the past for $200 set.

Ok. Thanks for the info, Tim and genikz. One more question... From what I can tell, the '87-88 924s and 944 has 52.3mm offset rims, where the early 944 has 23.3mm. If I bolt up the early wheels to a 924s, does that work and give me the 944 track width, as allowed in the rules?

Nope, don't know him. I was just looking for a competitive and relatively cheap class to race in (not much competition in HU or SU), and I came across 944-spec, then svochuck made a thread over on NASA RM's own forum about it and got me even more interested. I have always wanted a 944 too.

Yeah, just reading the ad on that white one made me think it would be more trouble than it's worth. It'll still be about another month or so until I start going out and looking at cars, and I'll definately be talking to you. I was just casually looking at what's out there and noticed that they were both missing that lower valance, so I was wondering if it was a common issue with the 924s'.

On the 924S, I don't think the early cookies or phonies will even fit under the fenders. A 15mm spacer gets a late offset 7" wheel to the edge of the fender and an early wheel is 30mm more offset to the outside than the lates.

Also, bear in mind that the 924S's have the lower radiator mounting shelf attached directly to the spoiler, unlike the 944's. So if the spoiler/valence is missing, you've probably got damage to the lower shelf.

Better to find a sweet street car with no accidents and pay more for it.

I recently paid $300 for a parts car 87 924S.

I paid $700 for a parts car 1988 924S.

But I paid $2500 for the 86 944 that I built into my newest racer/rental car. 75K miles and no accident damage whatsoever. See what I mean? Take your time finding a GOOD chassis.

The 924S is in many ways an odd beast. Lots of early and late parts on the cars. Wheel offset was 52.3 mm. This was required to clear the narrow fenders. The suspension parts themselves fit on 944 chassis and use early offset wheels.

The rules for the 924S when it comes to wheels are such that they run on the same wheels the 87 and 88 944 run on. 15x7 52.3 mm "late" offset phone dials. The track is narrower than the 944 by twice the difference in offset as one might imagine. You can use spacers on the 924S to increase track, but before you reach the 944 track you will exceed the limitations of the narrow fenders. Rules also require the tires to stay inside the stock fender profile. You can trim in the INSIDE of the fender, but the outside profile and wheel opening must be stock. So you can run a little spacer and with some negative camber probably gain back 1/2 of the stock 944 track. The key is to make sure you don't rub the fenders.
