4 cyl made it to AI, but with a poor performance.

First of all, I have to thank everybody for being really cool, you guys welcomed me, then put up with me on the track, I was having a bad case of new car blues, on saturday, I was passed by the whole field, twice I think, the turbo was going away, the power was down so bad, that I could not get it into 4th gear, went home fixed it, sunday started ok, then, snapped the throttle shaft in half, (yea, I know, how does that happen) did a field fix, started the main, then proceeded to break off the exhaust pipe from the turbo, also killing the power, somebody passed me waving his hand indicating that my car stunk, I had the heat wrap burning nicely, at that point I just watched the race from the runoff part of the course, it was a rough weekend, on the bright side, the balance of the car was good, I saw how the V8 cars were handling and braking, I think there might be some potential to the lightweight well balanced 4 cyl package, it will take a more robust budget than mine to to bring it to a reality, but, all in all, it was alot of fun, the people were great, and the competition fierce, hopefully next year, the weak spots will be worked out of the car, and I can have a bit more fun,

Thanks again.

Hey Mike, sorry I didn't introduce myself. We were pitted nearby (07 car), but its been so damn long since my teamate Mike and I have raced that we had to do some work on the car not to mention I was helping some others work on their cars. Hope you had fun and see you again next season.

Hey Mike, get that car fixed and come back race with us. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help.

Mike,

It was great meeting you! You've got a pretty good looking car there. I look forward to running with you when you get the gremlins worked out.

For those of us who are not in God's Country ( I came from there so I can say that) what make, model, year car is this that is making history?

Pics??

...and welcome!!! We look forward to a non-V8 exploring the nether regions of the rules!

It's a 84 SVO mustang, I will get some pics together in the next couple of days, last time, I had to email pics to somebody else to post, I will try again. as for the rules, I think they favor 4 cyl, but in my case I couldent get the car any lighter than about 2550 dry, without me! the 2.3T weighs just under 450lbs complete with turbo, a smallblock 5 liter with alum heads is right about that or lighter I think.

I am going to try and shave some weight this winter, and get the reliability sorted out.

Yes, you will see me next year, I will run as many races as I can afford, I really need to find a sponsor!!

Do you have plans to run this car at any events next season? Autobahn? RA?

Have you done any testing yet? I had issues with the header, ( broke/cracked two of them in two outings) the title of this topic would have been different if I could have run the car trouble free, most 2.3T headers are not up to the task of roadracing, even with the turbo support bracket, the long 1700* degree runs for 30 minutes at a time just kills them, well I'm sure that my go kart driving style of clipping the apex curbing at the end of a long 3rd/4th gear pull has something to do with it.

What header/manifold are you using, I destroyed a ATR, and cracked a RODS header, Stinger said I would likly crack one of his headers, that only leaves a log type header that weighs 30+ pounds or a stock manifold, I am still looking for a good solution, and race season is near.

I was unable to pull up racefab.com to look at the pictures. send me a link.

I know a guy here local to me in Wilson, Ks that builds headers for SVOs. His name is Shannon, I'm unsure if he's one of the named compaines above but I'll check into it for you.

Yea, thats Stinger performance, He is pretty cool, he lent me a header so I could run the last event of 2006.

He thought I might crack his header due to the sustained high temps and the abuse from roadracing.

What header are you going to run??

Thanks, Mike.

Mike,

Ok, I didn't know what Shannon had named his company. Have you tried any ceramic coatings on the header yet to help with durability?

I have http://www.hpcoatings.com on a set of headers, I have nothing but good things to say about the HPC ceramic coatings. Very durable to knicks and dropped wrenches, etc.

Im not building a SVO engine but you asked so anyways Im building a 4.6l DOHC and I'll be running a set of MAC LT headers. Not the best but once they're HPC coated I think they'll be halfway decent.

Its a big problem. We need to either go to a higher grade of ss or inconel ($$) or suffer the weight penalty of a weld-el log. I'm trying to get a hold of the Hubers (of the 2.3l 800 hp drag car fame) to find out pricing and weight of the manifold they sell. I'll post when I know.

I should have the car at several events this year including road america.

It took me about a year to get my 2.3 Turbo holding up to the track experience. Heat management was a real pain. I can say now that it's doing well, finally. Major header alterations, heat shields, hood vents, and more...

What header are you using, one you built? or something else.

That is my biggest problem, finding a header that will take the abuse.

Thanks.
