Clarification of some rules

Hello, I'm new to the group and just starting to strip our 944. I need some help/advice on following :

1) Our '87 has 951 ( turbo look ) front fenders & fibreglass front valance. PCA racing gave me a ruling that this would not be allowed & I can't figure out why since it is an "esthetic" modification only. How would NASA see this ?

2) We have a complete 944 Turbo rear suspension out to & incl. the rotors & driveline assy c/w rear differential. We were hoping to rebuild all of this & swap out the old stock stuff that's on the car now. Can we ?

Thanks to all that can help us ! Cheers, Max.

No, and no.

But don't shoot the messenger... I'm still building my car!

The idea of the class is to put everyone on the same ground. While the turbo bumper may not make you faster, it's about perceived differences.

As for the second question, the stock suspension configuration must be retained. See the rules but you can only upgrade the torsion bars and shocks within a very specific range. The tranny could be swapped I believe but the overall ratio will be too low for a NA motor's powerband. The turbo sways could be used however.

Let's talk. May find a place for you in the 944 Cup. Email me at [email protected]. We have a NorthEast Chapter of the series with races in your area: Lime Rock, Watkins Glen, etc.

Not legal in 944 spec either. Reason is that it is not just asetics, but the 944 Turbo had a published Cd of .33 while the 944 had a Cd of .34 Not much but given the low hp of the cars what drag factor would you want to run going up the back straight at Mosport? Only allowed body works in 944 spec are the 944 NA or 924S. The Cd on teh 924S is better than the 944, but it also has a narrower track too. However 951 body work should be easy to return back to stock, Just two fenders, front header panel and the bumper cover. 944 spec allows the front spoiler to be stock 944 NA shape only, but allows this to be fiberglass rather than stock due parts avaliablity. Of course shape must be the same to allow for same aerodymaics.

944 Turbo rear suspension may in fact be legal. Reason is that the 86 944 Turbo rear suspension (t-bar carrier & trailing arms) were the same parts used on the NA from 86. The trailing arms on my 87 924S parts car are stamped with 951 part numbers. So they are infact the same parts. T-bars are free up to 30 mm so you can use any that fit. Rear brakes however must be 944 NA. Rear transaxle, must contain the stock 944 NA ratios including final drive. 5th gear be can from from 83-87 944, 87-88 924S or 88 944.

Remember the entire idea behind 944 spec is to keep the cars equal and stock. This ensures that everyone has the same chance to win. No equalizing formulas, just equal parts. Last race weekend I lost first place to another racer - Norm. We ran the same tires on the same wheels. On the extact same dyno his car made 135.0 whp and mine made 134.2 He has nearly idential spring rates and crossed the scales 3 lbs lighter than me. He beat me by 0.2 second this last race and 0.1 second the race before that.

Equal cars breeds close racing and close racing is loads of fun.

I Like to show this picture since I am in front of this time, but Norm's would get the better of me. He simply out drove me... just way it should be to win in this class.

Thanks guys for the input.

The reason I'm building this car is that I firmly believe in the spec class concept. I raced open wheel Formula Vee for years & it was very similar as to what could be done do the cars. My objective certainly wasn't to gain some advantage or to bend the rules or the spirit of the class. We just happen to have a car with this fender & bumper set -up on it & lots of spares from a parted out Turbo. Only intent is to save time & money using what we have inventory.

Hopefully it won't be a problem swapping out the body parts & we'll have to do some more research on the rear suspension.

Also- I'm floored this forum even exists & I have gathered a lot of valablr info going over all posts. Project is looking more fun all the time !

Max,

I'm glad you're here and asking the right questions FIRST. Good for you.

It seems like you want to get on board with the concept of equal cars. Stock components are the cheapest to source. Upgrades already on the car can be sold off to pay for the stock stuff.

Please help us maintain the great racing we already have by following the rules, and asking lots of questions where needed.

I hope your cars can attend many NASA and PCA events right in your neck of the woods, then we'll see you at the NASA Nationals.

Just to let everyone know- the 2007 NASA CCR's have significant changes regarding what happens after a track is red flagged. Changes in italics:

After all drivers must come to a stop, flag stations should drop their Red Flags, at the direction of the Chief of Communications, and one of the following should occur:

1) All flag stations will motion to the drivers to continue. All drivers shall proceed to the starting line using extreme caution, being prepared to stop if necessary. Drivers shall remain in their cars and prepare for the session resume or restart.

2) All flag stations will display double yellow flags indicating that the drivers should continue on course until a green flag is displayed.

3) All flag stations will display a black flag indicating that the remainder of the session has been canceled and the drivers should exit the track.
