Packfill Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 Hey, Mike... You are a pretty good wrench arent you?? Why not do it yourself?? If it is no hurry and dont mind drivin' a bit... I have two I need to do in the next month or so... You could certainly come down and watch.... This is an extremely expensive job to do in a shop...usually around $400-450 for parts and 8-10 hours @ 60-100 depending on the shop... Do you have a trailer?? Quote
Weston Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 What makes the 924S/944 clutch job such a pain? Seems like it wouldn't be much worse than dropping a FWD tranny, except that it's on the other end of the car. Quote
Norman#99 Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 Besides taking off the half shafts, tranny, drive shaft, shifter linkage, torque tub, starter, bell housing, exhaust and a couple of other small items, it's really easy!!! While there, I would change the rear main oil seal. If you don't and it starts to leak, you'll wish you did. From personal experience, I would watch Jim do it first. Good luck, Norman #99 Quote
944-Spec#94 Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 It is not that hard, but takes a long time. Paying shop labor rates makes it tough too. Norm has the process down though. Quote
924sowner Posted November 20, 2006 Author Posted November 20, 2006 my problem really is i cant get the torque tube back far enough to get the bellhousing off... im putting on a pressure plate aswell as a disc so its not just like the job i ended up helping with at buttonwillow earlier this year. 944-Spec#94 Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 take the transmission out of the car then woth torque tube loose rotate it so you can side it back. Quote
Tim Comeau Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 Yeah, Mike, it's alot of work. The tranny has to come completely out. Don't bend the black shifter rod! Then, shifter out, roll the torque tube over, slide it back, yadda, yadda. Don't just replace the clutch disc. Get the flywheel turned at a machine shop. You'll get a new throw out bearing with the clutch kit, but also buy a new pilot bearing and rear seal. You'll need a clutch alignment tool and a torque wrench for the new flywheel bolts (one-time use). Quote
924sowner Posted November 22, 2006 Author Posted November 22, 2006 this is one of those moments where you want someone to smack you and call you a 'dee de dee' .................. your spupposed to turn the torque tube?? dang... that would have saved a couple months worth of time... ok cool... and hey jim, pm me with details, that might be interesting. getting this thing done faster would help as it would save me nearly $800 every 6 months.... Packfill Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 We are in the fabriaction stage of Flat Out Enterprises (FOE00002) We will be putting a new clutch, throw out, pilot, etc, next week... It really is only about a 5 hour job... three weeks ago we did two in one day!! If you want to come done and give us a hand... feel free... Mike, the one we did at the track, we only replaced the clutch plate, (not advisable, but we were only trying to get throughthe next race....) so the torque tube/bell housing didnt have to be removed as far... 944spec92 Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 Jim: If your offer is an open one, let me know approximately what day and time you will be pulling a tranny off. I will try to arrange to swing by your Flat Out Enterprises shop so I may observe the procedure before my attempt to remove mine over the winter. Quote
