Richmond, CA (Feb 20, 2009) – The National Auto Sport Association (NASA) is pleased to announce the introduction of a new race classification called “Super Touring R (STR)” for tube frame constructed race vehicles. This new class will be introduced on a provisional basis for 2009 to test interest before being afforded a permanent place in the organization. Two classes will be available using the popular Super Touring format with simple power to weight ratios and other modification factors used to determine placement into STR1 (5.5:1 minimum adjusted ratio) or STR2 (8.7:1 minimum adjusted ratio). The STR1 and STR2 classes will be available immediately in all NASA regions and will also be offered at the National Championships at Miller Motorsports Park. That is correct. There are no additional modification factors in STR. If you look at the differences in the STR Car Classification Form and the ST Form, you will see that they are not there.

I have a Panoz GTRA that I would like to eventually run in ST2 with my Corvette buddies... I take it I can still do that? What is the purpose of the STR classes?

Cool... I just figured out the classification calcs and we come in at 8.92 lbs/horse with the corrections. We were shooting for 300-320 rwhp w/ our build up and that has put us in proper position to still run ST2

The "purpose" of the STR classes is to allow a lot of tube-frame cars running with other organizations to now also run with NASA. In addition, you now have two different classes you can run with in NASA (ie, Supersize at the Championships for two Championship races instead of one).

In ST1 and ST2, the 7's Only Mazda GT Spec cars have an additional -0.2 modification factor (just like the Panoz GTRA has). However, the -0.2 modification factor does not apply in STR1 and STR2 since tube frame chassis are legal and not assessed anything extra. There is no STU. SU is Super Unlimited, and it has almost no rules.

So, both the 7's Only Mazda's and the Panoz GTRA's can run in either an ST or an STR class. They will need to run a bit heavier in ST, though (at the same power level). But, they can now easily run in both at the Championships, giving them two options for National Championship competition, or the choice to run both.

I'm building a Factory 5 coupe for STR 1, hopefully completed by next spring. Please let us know ASAP what the changes are going to be.

I'm new to all of this, any tips?

I would hope they are kept, the modification factors on some of our cars in ST render them (i think) totally uncompetitive.

Atleast in the midwest, we have 6 guys that ran atleast half the races, 2 more building cars, one on the fence about running and one starting next year at the beginning. Dont know how the support for the class elsewhere but here its about as good as could be predicted for a virgin class.

This class allows no head-ache crossover for the lower class GT cars, slower sports racers, our group with our little clown cars, etc etc. Axing it would make the transition once again more difficult and make lazy people stay home or race other places.

What changes may be made? Any hints? I was thinking of building a motor this winter to run at the pointy end of the class but dont want to overdo it.

Thanks
