How can I identify methanol as opposed to regular gasoline?

You could mix equal parts with water, i.e. 1 part mystery fluid to 1 part water.

Methanol, being a simple alcohol is miscible with water. Gasoline, being a hydrocarbon base, isnt. Even if it is gasoline with ethanol, youll still have a pretty clear phase separation.

Also, methanol has a fairly distinctive odor than any trained engineer would know.

Edit: I work just down the road from you, so if you need a bit of help, drop me a PM.
