NASA American Iron Series Opens 2013 at a Snowy VIRginia International Raceway

The 2013 season of the NASA American Iron Racing Series kicked off February 16, 2013, at VIRginia International Raceway. Temperatures hovered around the freezing mark and a mix of precipitation that included rain, sleet, and snow fell throughout the day. At times visibility was near zero and the track remained wet all day.

We had a great turnout of eight AI cars for a February event considering the weather conditions. Robert Korzen’s EliteClassics.net Ford Mustang led the AI field to the green followed by Steve Kent’s 2012 Mustang, rookie Michael Cook’s Fox Mustang, Jimmy Bost’s FirstImpressionSalon.net Mustang Cobra, and Chris Cobetto’s Performance Autosport Mustang GTR that missed practice due to crash damage suffered during practice. Roddey Sterling ran solo in the American Iron Extreme class with his 2013 Moon Pie Mustang. All drivers ran a smart race and as a result there was little drama. Steve Kent took the AI win followed by Korzen, Cobetto, Bost and Cook.

Sunday started out cold and windy but with a dry track. Steve Kent started from the pole with a fast lap of 2:05.9. Right on his tail was Robert Korzen, Chris Cobetto, Jimmy Bost, and Mike Cook. Korzen fought hard and held on to second while Steve Kent took his second victory of the weekend. Chris Cobetto rounded out podium followed by Bost and Cook.

With Steve Kent’s two victories, he now leads the Motion Control Suspension Championship standings. The group returns to VIR March 23rd where we expect another great turnout and the unveiling of several new American Iron racecars. (http://www.motioncontrolsuspension.com)
