What DOT track tire lasts the longest?

Trackfast

Recommended Posts

I'm new to this and will only be doing track days to start in a full weight 1990 Mustang coupe.

Thinking about the Hankook RS3. Anybody have any other opinions?

Running 17x9 Enkei wheels. Moderate power. The car will have a full MM suspension front and rear and will see some street time.

I ran the entire 25 hrs of Thunderhill on 2 sets of Nitto NTO1's. Still had tire left, too.

Other good tire for that is the Bridgestone RE-11 if all around tire is needed.

A Hankook RS3 has a treadwear of 140, whereas a Nitto NT01 has a treadwear of 100. I have used (and loved) NT01s over the last several years and they last a very long time before heat cycling out or cording. I would think a RS3 would last even longer with a treadwear of 140, unless it is prone to chunking due to the tread pattern.

I have yet to try it BUT I think a set of RS3s shaved to 6/32nds (depth NT01 starts at) would produce very comparable lap times. This is based on the lap times I did at the same track/same car with fairly used NT01s and REALLY used RS3s.

do yourself a favor and look at these two

Dunlop Direzza Z2

BF Goodrich G-Force Rival

both are noticeably better than the R-S3 from Hankook

I've not used either of these but please define "better". Grip, wear or both? in wet and dry? Thanks for the clarification.

There are a lot factors that effect tire longevity and proper wear.....

Two important factors are the driver and the car setup........both, if not correct, will destroy a tire prematurely.

I would also like to know more about this, I was just getting ready to buy a tire in this category. Could you elaborate on this more?

....assuming all those factors equal....and the car set up properly.

Exactly. That's what I was meaning.

when comparing the Rival with the R-S3 and R1R the Rival offered more grip and better steering response

as far as wear look at these pictures I took at NOLA in January

Hankook Ventus R-S3 after 48 AutoX runs

Toyo Proxes R1R after 48 runs

G-Force Rival after 72 AutoX runs

the Rival offered better turn in and more progressive break away at the limits than the others ... it was noticeably easier to drive fast when compared to the R-S3 or the R1R

car used was a bone stock 2013 Subaru STi

The Z2 was not involved in that event but, was shown to be significantly better in both the dry and wet when compared to the Z1 Star Spec it replaces

and yes Phil is correct driver inputs and car setup are critical factors to get the most out of any tire .... and many times setups can be different with different tires
