National Staff Greg G. Posted April 14, 2015 National Staff Share Posted April 14, 2015 New BFG Rival S points same as the old Rival? +2? It is not a classed tire. Please submit a request for review for classing by e-mail if you are considering it. Thanks.

Please submit a request for review for classing by e-mail if you are considering it. Thanks. Why would it need to be submitted. It falls into 8.3.A as a 200 TW tire. It just lists examples not specific tires. It's a 200 TW tire you can run it

Any new tire or tire with a changed UTQG tread wear rating must be evaluated by the National TT Director before the rating will be legal for use in NASA TT classing. All DOT-approved tires must be available for purchase by the general public through Federal or state licensed tire dealers." So, we were not aware of this tire being available when the rules were revised--and still not sure when? But, either way, it will require review. SBD
Street tire Points? : Three new tires the rival s, kumho 720s, Brig RE71R. Question as to what the points are? They are all 200 rated.
kbrew8991
there's alot of "churn" in that category of tire, probably outta keep an eye on it.
ILIKETODRIVE
Everyone forgets the 140 treadwear Federal 595 RS-R. It's HUGELY oversized. Like some sizes have proven to be larger than their NT-01 and Toyo counterparts.
Snowmants
Did the RE71R ever get approval for use in the 200 TW category of tires?
National Staff Greg G. Posted August 27, 2015 National Staff Share Posted August 27, 2015 None of those tires have been officially approved. They can all be run as +6 point tires for the rest of the season until we can get them classed for '16.
Snowmants
Well in that case, Thanks! As long as those tires are on the docket for review for 2016 rules I'm a happy camper. How exactly do you evaluate the tires? is it basis lap times of a few guinea pigs the season before? Just curious!

I think that's part of it. I feel like you could knock out two birds with one stone: Eliminate the +2 category. This will entice people to start running 140+ treadwear "street" tires (HINT: Shave them!) AND eliminate the need to test them and update constantly. Magus2727
From what I have been told is that the Rival S+ are more for Auto-X than road curse because they heat up faster for the shorter Auto-X style of driving and may not be the best for longer driving sessions. Real world comparison may be needed and may vary by track which tires you may want to run. This does not impact the evaluation at all, but may provide question if you want to run it if you are on road course vs Auto-X.

For TT, that's actually more ideal. 1 warm-up lap; lay down a 10/10ths flyer; park it & save it.
