Here's the race report for the weekend. A big THANKS! and a hug to Kent Owens for playing series director for me over the weekend and writing up the report. I was one of the luck 2,000,000+ people without power all weekend and couldn't make it to the track.

==================================

The NASA Great Lakes Mid-Ohio event June 30-July 1 was another great weekend for the CMC crew. The racers pulled into Mid-O Friday night to a big, dark hole in the middle of Ohio, as the track had no electricity. Ohio was hit hard Friday afternoon with a storm that left several hundred thousand people without power. The storms kept several people from the track who ended up staying home to take care of storm damage.

Saturday morning was still a bit damp, but the power was back on. The track had dried for out qualifying, with Derek Wright and Rob Legree taking the front row. Nine CMC cars made a run at the pole, but none could match Derek’s 1:42.59. The race start was fairly entertaining, with Derek bogging down as the flag dropped. Once he managed to get going, he slotted into second place behind Rob and Kent Owens followed in 3rd, but it was a bit of a scramble behind him. Tim Bennett, Chris Capaldi, and Erik (Anders) Sjoblom ran side-by-side up to the Keyhole, with Tim coming out on top in 4th, Chris next, and Anders taking his patented grass line to 6th. Kent held 3rd until lap two, when Derek had a run on Rob out of T1 and decided to take a page out of Anders book (the afore mentioned grass line) and tried a pass at the Keyhole…right along side the brake markers on the left. Things were going fairly well, until he decided he probably should get back to the asphalt, where he and Rob had a slight disagreement over space. Derek managed to keep it out of the kitty litter, but let Kent slide by into 2nd. Coming through T7 and up into Madness, Kent managed to squeak by Rob for first. Tim, Anders, and Chris had a great battle for the next several laps along with Spencer Caudle, Joe Sullivan and newcomer John Cece. Race 1 sorted out with Tim hanging on for his second podium of the season, Derek bagging fast lap, and John getting his first race back in the saddle under his belt.

Sunday was hot and sunny. And hot. And sunny. Oh, and it was hot. Qualifying was the definition of CMC racing, with rookie Spencer Caudle taking the pole. Nice job rook! What makes Sunday’s Q session so special is that the top 3 spots were .05 between 1st and 3rd, and the top 7 spots were less than .8 seconds apart! That’s CMC at it’s finest… 4 different chassis, and both Ford and GM in the mix. Spectacular! The race had Spencer on pole, with Derek along side. Anders and Chris made up row 2, with Kent, Tim, Rob, John, and Tom Petrosky filling out the field. Sunday’s heat took it’s toll on the group, with Caudle having fuel pick-up problems, causing him to loose some of that awesome 3rd gen power on the start, and dropping back to 6th. The first few laps had Derek, Anders, Chris, Tim and Kent nose to tail, with the rest of the gang in full view just behind them. Things sorted out around lap 3, with Anders and Kent pulling hard to catch Derek. Derek finally pulled a gap on them about mid-race, and Anders got separation from Kent with around 3 laps to go.

In looking at the lap times this last weekend, along with the season standings in the GL/MW regions, you can start to see that CMC has been some of the most exciting racing the NASA family. We’re looking forward to doing it all again July 14/15 at Autobahn Country Club in Joliet IL. See you there!
