What kind? Where to buy? Color? gogogear.com Other than that, make sure they are good and legible so that the folks in T&S can see them. Even though the AMB system is flawless, then still manually tape "just in case".
CaptainWho
Besides adhering to the CCR guidelines on size, there are two real issues for us on the corners: 1) Make sure that the color of the graphics has a lot of contrast with the color they're "against". Yellow numbers on a white car or black numbers on a dark blue car are very hard to read. 2) Don't use fancy, frilly fonts. Basic sans serif fonts (like Arial or Helvetica) are usually best, with the added benefit that they're often easier to apply and remove since they don't have lots of little doo dads and curlicues that get stuck to the frisket. Basic serif conts (like Times Roman) are OK, but avoid the really fancy stuff like Olde English. Also, when picking a font, make life easy on yourself by picking a font and a base number that are easy to modify with racer's tape to get different numbers in the cases where your number isn't available in your run group for particular events. If possible, go ahead and make them bigger than the CCR requires, too, at least the car numbers. From the corners and at the T&S shed, the car color and car number are the most important things. PDenbigh
Everything he said! From someone that's worked T&S, we start ignoring cars with hard-to-read numbers. When a pack of 8 come by the line, we rely on picture memory and we don't have time to "think" about what number went by. We literally write down every car that passes... 11,06,133,62,47,38,00... As fast as possible in a column on the paper. You can usually tell the folks that have illegable numbers, the column looks like this: 11, 06, X, X, X, 38, 00. Those X's could very easily mean the difference between top five and top 10 place. 944-Spec#94
I like to use number boards. Typicaly you overlay a black number on a white background. This means for any car color you have instant contrasting background. For mine I had a graphics sign shop do mine in vinyl similar to the sponsor graphics. Of course here it is from distance. Even at angle and in shadow the number is visible Although I could a have gone with a thicker font to make the numbers standout even more.
