Roll cage and the CCR

best friend and I have been in NASA for 3 years now.  We both drive Mazda rx8's and it's past due time to think about safety. Our plan is comp licenses and we want to better prepare the cars for such. The plan is to get roll cages before start of next season. We have found a company that makes what seems to be quality built roll cages but unsure that they will mee the standard of NASA so this is my question We have read the hand book but still unsure so reaching out to fellow members and or safety inspectors will this company supply a product that will pass tech. We have been quoted cages but the price is out of reach for our budget and found this company but looking to see if they will qualify for the organization

Hi Brent,

All the cages shown here are listed as "for drift use." To verify if they can be used in NASA racing, here are the diameter requirements for cars by weight. A stock RX-8 weighs around 3,100 pounds, so use that for your tubing diameter. Neither the photos you show, nor the AST website list diameters or tubing thickness or material.

It's also worth noting that they look like they originate from Spain? Shipping likely would negate any savings there, and you still need to factor in installation costs/welding.

The only domestic kits I found are from AutoPower, and it doesn't look like the door bars are appropriate for racing. You likely would have to have the fabricator make custom door bars that protrude into gutted doors, at the very least on the driver's side. At that point, you might be at the price point of a custom cage.

1501 - 2500 lbs

1.500” x 0.095” Seamless Alloy (4130), Seamless mild steel (CDS Mechanical), DOM, or Docol R8 (only)

1.500” x 0.120” ERW* (No issuance of logbooks for cars with ERW cages) *Note- Specifications listed only for reference for inspection of grandfathered vehicles.

2501 - 3000 lbs

1.500” x 0.120” Seamless Alloy (4130), Seamless mild steel (CDS Mechanical), DOM, or Docol R8 (only) 1

.750” x 0.095” Seamless Alloy (4130), Seamless mild steel (CDS Mechanical), DOM, or Docol R8 (only)

1.750” x 0.120” ERW* (No issuance of logbooks for cars with ERW cages) *Note- Specifications listed only for reference for inspection of grandfathered vehicles.

There are construction do's and don't's in the CCR. See section 15.6 in the CCR linked below.

Long story longer, this AST cage looks like it could work, but you would need to know the diameter and tubing material and thickness. You also would need to know shipping costs and time frames. Again, shipping and a competent installer add to the price.

Longer still, never, ever skimp on safety equipment, especially something as important as a roll cage. Tell us where you're located and we likely can put you in touch with a custom cage builder in your area, if you want.
