The oil is getting black quickly just because of the age of the engine, blowby contamination along with a buildup of deposits in the engine over time being cleaned out. I'm sure the oil is perfectly fine even at that point. There's no doubt that Red Line is good stuff, it's a true Group IV+ synthetic. Mobil 1 is no longer what most consider a true synthetic, it's group III, I read up on it some yesterday. Mobil 1 is going downhill in value because of this change, but it's still a decent oil. If you want an example of another Group III, Rotella T synthetic 5w-40 is a very good one with lots of good additives because it's a HDEO (for diesels but also approved for cars) and is less than 20 dollars a gallon last time I checked.
